ASEAN and EU sign a historical open sky agreement

On October 17, representatives of ASEAN and the European Union signed a historical air transport agreement. For the first time, two economic blocs agreed on a global air transport policy applicable simultaneously in 37 countries. The move replaces more than 140 bilateral air service agreements, with now only one single set of rules and reduced red tape.

For passengers, the new agreement comes with the possibility of making new connections from anywhere in ASEAN and the EU. Air carriers from both regions can fly up to 14 weekly passenger services and offer fifth freedom traffic rights to areas further afield. Also for the first time, issues surrounding the environment, sustainability and CSR are included in the agreement.
